Sorry to bore you, but yet again, I’m going to start this blog post talking about how hot Lisbon is. The past weekend had set yet another record – It hit 44 degree celsius!! (See how forced our smiles were in the photo!) This weather is waaaaayyyyyyyy too hot even for a tropical girl like me! And guess what? Most residential houses in Portugal do not have air-conditioning facilities (including mine), so staying at home is similar to being trapped in an oven! For once, I do not need to consciously remind myself to drink water due to my consistent, unquenchable thirst from my consistent, profuse sweating! If there’s any positive experience from the heat wave, it’s the fact that my laundry dries within an hour.
While the Portuguese rushed to the beach, Querido and I headed to the shopping mall for a cooler environment. So Singaporean, right? :p To be honest, the air-conditioning at the mall was rather weak. That said, relative to the flaming sun in the streets, even thirty degree celsius would be considered refreshing! And so, Querido and I simply lazed our weekend away at Starbucks – people-watching, reading magazines, doing proper work and engaging in frivolous chats
By the way, do you know that 6 July is International Kissing Day? Apparently, a Thai couple, husband and wife team Ekkachai and Laksana Tiranarat, holds the world record for the longest kiss at 58 hours, 35 minutes and 58 seconds! Wow! Anyway, Lush was trying to beat the Guiness record for the most number of printed kisses and I joined in the fun! Afterall, the entire process was done in the comfort of an air-conditioned environment. Haha.
I also went for a river cruise with some of my course-mates last Friday. It was along River Tejo, the longest river on the Iberian Peninsula, and it was very different viewing Lisbon from another angle. It made me realise why it is always good to take a step back sometimes and see the big picture!!! The cruise provided glimpses of the varying personalities of Lisbon – the rich historical heritage of the Old Town, the modern architecture in the New Town, the sunny beaches, etc etc.. Lovely!!!
That’s all for now…. I need to refill my glass of ice-cold water.. Yet again..
